{"id":712,"date":"2010-11-11T14:23:52","date_gmt":"2010-11-11T19:23:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thechristys.net\/?p=712"},"modified":"2010-11-11T14:23:52","modified_gmt":"2010-11-11T19:23:52","slug":"maybe-you-should-dig-out-that-camera-of-yours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/thechristys.net\/?p=712","title":{"rendered":"Maybe you should dig out that camera of yours"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Everyone likes photography one way or another.\u00a0 Some like to look at pictures, other take them and some relish the opportunity to be in them.\u00a0 I have posted pieces about photography<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> <\/span><a title=\"in the past\" href=\"http:\/\/thechristys.net\/?s=photography\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">in the past<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 I like looking at photography and taking pictures.\u00a0 There is a 4th passion having to do with the capture of images &#8211; manipulating them.\u00a0 Everyone is familiar with the Photoshop application as a tool to make things disappear or to insert impossible images into photos.\u00a0 There is another type of photo manipulation you have probably seen but not known exactly what it was, it&#8217;s called <strong>HDR<\/strong>.\u00a0 HDR stands for High Dynamic Range.<\/p>\n<p>Here is an\u00a0over simplified explanation of HDR:\u00a0 Imagine that the full range of color and intensity in the world goes from 0 &#8211; 100.\u00a0 Our eyes see most of it but not all of it, maybe values\u00a020-85.\u00a0 A photograph (and print or display on a computer) is less than that, for arguments sake, lets say between 35-60.\u00a0 This is one of the reasons a photo can&#8217;t fully express a sunset or light streaming through a stained glass window, we see the values between 20-85 (and feel even more than that) but the photo we take only shows the middle 35-60 colors and intensities.\u00a0 An HDR photo turns up the colors and intensities (light and dark) to 11.\u00a0 It artificially boosts the values in the\u00a0photo.\u00a0 If done poorly the photo just looks overblown and garish, if done well it can actually come closer to the &#8220;<em>real<\/em>&#8221; feeling you had when you saw it in person.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, <em>first<\/em> you have to be a good photographer then you have to become an HDR artist. \u00a0The best HDR collection I know about is from a guy named Trey Ratcliff, he lives in Texas and he has photos from all over the world on his site <a title=\"Stuck In Customs\" href=\"http:\/\/www.stuckincustoms.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Stuck In Customs<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 I warn you, if you start looking at these photos it&#8217;s hard to stop, &#8220;regular&#8221; photos will be less impressive and if you have any desire to take pictures, you will want to try HDR photography.\u00a0 Lucky for you Trey has a tutorial on the site to show you how to do it.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t miss the navigation down the right side of the page toward the bottom, all the pictures are in groups so you can see all his shots of India or Disney World.<\/p>\n<p>The photo below is called<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> The Most Beautiful Road in The World<\/span> it is outside Queensland in New Zealand<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thechristys.net\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/queenstown.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-713\" title=\"queenstown\" src=\"http:\/\/thechristys.net\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/queenstown.jpg\" alt=\"HDR photography\" width=\"900\" height=\"572\" srcset=\"http:\/\/thechristys.net\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/queenstown.jpg 900w, http:\/\/thechristys.net\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/queenstown-300x190.jpg 300w, http:\/\/thechristys.net\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/queenstown-150x95.jpg 150w, http:\/\/thechristys.net\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/queenstown-400x254.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here is an over simplified explanation of HDR: Imagine that the full range of color and intensity in the world goes from 0 &#8211; 100.
