{"id":1010,"date":"2011-10-20T15:45:04","date_gmt":"2011-10-20T20:45:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thechristys.net\/?p=1010"},"modified":"2016-07-20T10:38:21","modified_gmt":"2016-07-20T15:38:21","slug":"nfc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thechristys.net\/?p=1010","title":{"rendered":"NFC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>No, it\u2019s not a sports conference or a techno band, it stands for <strong>Near field communication<\/strong>.\u00a0 Now don\u2019t get that glazed look in your eyes.\u00a0 I am giving you a tip here that will impress your friends, make you look smarter and get you elected to the board of some lemonade stand startup.\u00a0 In the simplest terms NFC is this \u2013 two way communication between 2 devices that are very close to each other.\u00a0 I know, it doesn\u2019t sound like a big deal BUT it could change the way we do things like wireless phones and wireless internet did.\u00a0 When these things came out there was plenty of wired phones and wired connections to the internet.\u00a0 But, it was the \u201chow\u201d not the \u201cwhat\u201d <img loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 8px solid white; margin-right: 0px; margin-left: 0px; display: inline;\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn2.ubergizmo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/bmw-nfc.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"539\" height=\"362\" align=\"right\" \/>that was a big deal.\u00a0 Can you imagine having to plug an Ethernet cable into your Smartphone to check your mail or bring up a map?\u00a0 The \u201chow\u201d made all the difference, it\u2019s still just connecting to the internet.<\/p>\n<p>So, how is this NFC thing going to change the <em>how<\/em> for the masses?\u00a0 I predict in 2 areas authorization\/payment and data sharing.<\/p>\n<p>With a NFC enabled phone and merchant you could pay for your burger, shoes or Redbox rental just by waving your phone past a sensor.\u00a0 It\u2019s like EZTag for drive-thrus.\u00a0 Vending machines would be a natural.\u00a0 There is no reason you couldn\u2019t buy a ticket online then use the ticket with a wave of your phone to get into the concert.<\/p>\n<p>The other area is sharing data.\u00a0 I could give you a song\/picture\/contact info\/directions . . . . stored on my phone (or cloud) by tapping your phone with mine.\u00a0 I could add you as a friend on my social network with a clink of plastic.\u00a0 We could split the check for lunch with a swipe-tap-tap.<br \/>\nThis technology isn\u2019t new.\u00a0 These aren&#8217;t very outlandish or even original predictions so why talk about it now?\u00a0 Critical mass, there are enough pieces of the solution getting good enough and available to make it interesting to more than the bleeding edge types.\u00a0 The NJ transit system is experimenting with it.\u00a0 Google seems solidly behind it.\u00a0 The technology is being included in phones even though most of their owners are unaware of it today.<\/p>\n<p>If this gains traction, and I think it will, digging in your pocket for exact change will seem as arcane as looking something up in the Yellow Pages.\u00a0 Someone is going to brand it calling \u201ctap to pay\u201d or \u201cphone pass\u201d \u2013 something catchy but it\u2019s going to be NFC but you already knew that, you are ahead of the curve.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>it stands for Near field communication.
