Saturday was a beautiful day on the Texas coast. It was about 55 degrees out and not a cloud in the sky. Linda and I decided to go to the beach. We went boatless this time. Our plan was to go to San Lois Pass, an inlet between Galveston and Freeport. I wanted to try out my waders (plastic pants you wear so you can walk among the fishes). I bought them last year and had yet to use them. It was time.
There is a nice little park and large beach at SLP. We drove along the beach and picked a spot away from the 7 other people that were on the beach. If you have ever gone skiing and tried to put on all the snowsuits, gloves, boots et all you have some idea what it’s like to dawn wading gear for the first time. I think deep sea divers can get into their equipment faster and easier than I could put on my wading gear.
In the end, it all worked. I didn’t catch any fish at SLP but we drove down the beach a ways and I went into the surf. There I caught 5-6 whiting and a catfish. I probably could have caught more but I took a wave over the top of my waders and the 50 degree water danced it’s way down my chest and over my belly looking for all the warm parts. One last fish and I was back to the safety of the Expedition and began the disrobing. Even though it was nontraditional, it was a great day at the beach.
