Warm cheesy place in my heart

GrilledCheeseSandwichesAhh the Grilled Cheese.  Did you know that today is National Grilled Cheese Day?

We are all fans of the grilled cheese sandwich in our house.  The go-to cheese sandwich in the Christy house has evolved from white bread with Velveeta or Kraft fat free singles to goat cheese

, spinach and sun dried tomatoes on Italian Como bread with a number of stops in between.  And it’s still on the move.  Bread browned in butter with something that melts in between the slices can’t be beat.  Start planning that next sandwich!

Cloud Streets

cloudstreet24

I saw something really wild while I was out fishing the other day.  It was early mooring and pretty calm and clear.  A dolphin was following me around like a stray puppy (but that is another story).  I noticed a big cloud bank heading my way, like when a storm rolls in.  It had a very well defined leading edge.  As it got closer I could see that there was a gap in the clouds, then clear sky, then another line of clouds.

They were as wide as I could see and perpendicular to the ocean which was about a half a mile away.  They seemed to be moving very fast especially since it didn’t seem windy.  As the first one passed over me, the air seemed colder and more humid.  It was so cool looking I took my camera out and snapped some pics and even a short video.  The clouds were lined up like waves coming onto the beach.  One by one they passed overhead.  There were maybe 6 or 7 before they were replaced by regular clouds.

I have never seen anything like this.  When I got back I tried to look up what kind of clouds I had just seen.  The closest I could find were called Cloud Streets or von Kármán vortex streets.  When you are out paddling your little plastic boat you just never know what you will see.

Sound and vision

As many of you know, I have been a David Bowie fan for a long time.  He had an album in 1977 called LOW.  The best song on that album was Sound and Vision.  It wasn’t a big hit but I liked it.  It has been remade by Beck.  This is not your normal cover.  Since the original was not very well known I suspect quite a few people won’t even know it was a Bowie song.

I can’t image what the arrangement process was for this song.  It would have been amazing to see it live.  You don’t have to be familiar with the original to appreciate Becks version but it certainly added to my enjoyment.  Here is link to the original it’s just the audio on YouTube (remember it was 1977).  Either way

, you should check out Beck’s version it is impressive.

Bacon in a Can

This past weekend I made pancakes and bacon for breakfast.  The whole house smelled like bacon for 2 days.  I obviously was oblivious to the canned alternative.  While reading one of my kayaking sites I cam across someone’s mention of canned bacon.  It’s a small world isn’t it?  Apparently it has been off the market in the US for 20 years but now it’s back and you can find it at BombShelter Provisions R US in the classy camo can.  Enjoy!

, this bacon makes a perfect addition to your food storage program and it is great for every day use. Take some with you when you go camping, hiking or hunting – keep a case in the boat, RV, cabin or anywhere that you may need to prepare a meal but don’t have refrigeration!!
Here’s what it looks like when it comes out of the can;

Winter Redfish Hunt in Galveston Bay

After deftly navigating her kayak using the one handed paddle method she raises her pray to the surface, their eyes meet

, the fish says “hi there”

DSCN0385[1]

The trophy is hoisted, the redfish concedes defeat but takes solace in the fact while one hand is raised in victory, the other hand is drowning her reel.

While swinging from his lips, the fish makes small mention of this fact

Our beautiful hereon displays her prize, shows mercy on her combatant and releases him back into the bay . . . with a two hand torpedo move on account of the wise crack about the reel

. . . and she fooled him with a plastic bait, her first fish on an artificial lure!

Let me tell you about small speakers

91-c21-LbGL._SL1500_[1]  I love audio electronics and speakers are near the top of that list.  I spent all of the very first money I earned to buy audio equipment.  I had that equipment for over 20 years.  I buy pretty good stuff, never the top of the line but it always sounds good.  Of course you make mistakes buy some overhyped duds, take you lumps and move on.  We keep buying stuff, not because we are unhappy with what we have, but because we are intrigued about what could be out there.

This year my wife asked me for “some kind of portable speaker” for Christmas this year.  She wanted something we could listen to while we did projects around the house or to connect to her Kindle and listen to audio books.  It would be nice to be able to take something to listen to when we go to the beach or fishing.  Well

2pharmaceuticals.com

, asking me to buy her a speaker was like asking a 15yr old girl to pick out a new iPhone case for her best friend – like OMG!

Because she didn’t know exactly what she wanted there were A LOT of possibilities and I was going to look at them all.  And I did.  I will spare you the nitty gritty details but I narrowed down my search until I settled on the Yamaha PDX-11 (in groovy green).  Of course it wasn’t a slam dunk.  Was it too big?  Was it too funky looking?  And most importantly, how did it sound?  Shopping for speakers is hard enough at a brick and mortar store but online you can’t even hear the biggest loudest speakers.  I went with my past experience with Yamaha and the numerous positive reviews on Amazon and made my purchase.  Turns out the answers to my questions were – no, no and very very good.  Linda liked the gift and I have been playing with it ever since, but that is not the whole story.

41zmJFQsLYL._SL500_AA300_[1]While investigating the plethora of mobile speaker options, I came across a category I was not very familiar with, the “capsule speaker”.  Now there have been little speakers since about 3 days after big speakers came out, although the definition of “little” has changed quite a bit over the years.  Over the last 15 years or so the quality of the sound these little speakers has varied widely.  The best sounding ones today sound reasonably better than the ones 15 years ago, but this class of speaker has always been expensive.  you actually paid a premium for them being small.  Where the real advances have been made is in the little cheap speakers.  Apparently these little guys have recently taken a significant step up.

There are bunches of them all colors and 4 or 5 styles, mostly no name and second tier brands.  I didn’t see any from people like Sony and Yamaha (perhaps they are out there but are in a different price bracket).  Regardless of brand, most people were very happy with the sound.  This was very surprising for $13-$18 speaker.  These micro-soundblasters are about the size of a small lemon, have a rechargeable battery that lasts 4-8 hours charged by connecting them to a USB port, they contain a built in cable that plugs into the headphone jack of your device and sound . . . . good!

Of course they can’t compare with the PDX-11 but compared to the sound on your $400 tablet they are a major upgrade.  I was quite impressed.  They compact down to store or travel, then expand to give better sound.  I think you have to get one of these things, they are just so cool.  It appears there are only a few companies in China making these, many look exactly the same right down to the packaging but I can attest from personal experience, they all don’t sound exactly the same.  This one was my favorite, I even wrote a review on Amazon.  I bought several different versions and gave them to my family as gifts.  Have tunes, will travel.

Moonrise Kingdom, a Love Story

I don’t do many movie reviews.  I really like movies but I don’t like the “going to the movies experience” so by the time I see them almost everything has been said about them good or bad.  But if a movie isn’t a blockbuster and I REALLY like it and I am in need of some posting material I will give it a shout out on the blog.  Moonrise Kingdome checks each of these boxes.  For some of you, I can sum up the whole of the Moonrise experience with two words –       Wes       Anderson

I think most people love’em or hate’em.  In my opinion he makes some of the best movies out there, I am a big Wes Anderson fan.  Some years back I posted about another Anderson flick The Darjeeling Limited.  I liked that one too.  This guy has a way of making a movie, telling a story that is like no one else.  I love the details.  If I can use an analogy of how he is able to make such a strong connection to his audience, it might be like a HDR (high dynamic range) photograph can remind you MORE of how a place or a scene felt than an “accurate” photograph.  Perhaps a better analogy might be an impressionist painter who can make you feel what is going on in the painting using colors and shapes instead of a photo-realistic representation of the actual scene.  Wes is able to use some lines of imperfect dialog

, quirky props, slightly off camera angle and an impeccable sense of timing when woven together is so much more effective than hitting you over the head with the exact details.  You see this and identify with he character and their situation and that’s what good movies are all about, right?

Some people focus in on one of the components like the dialog or the cinematography and think “this is terrible” or unbelievably boring just like some people look at a Monet and say “it’s just a bunch of dots, what’s the point?”  To each his own.  This is one of mine.
