10th Avenue Freeze Out

Linda and I are going to another concert.  We will be hanging out with The Whigs, The Black Keys and the Kings of Leon when they  play in the outdoor venue The Cynthia Woods Pavilion in the Woodlands later this month.  I like all 3 of these bands and have provided a sample below for your listening pleasure.  My wife is not familiar with these particular musicians but encouraged me to get us tickets.  She prefers Niel Diamond over Nine Inch Nails and often must be physically retrained when KC and the Sunshine Band are played at social events, but she is looking forward to going to hear these young rockers.  Why you ask?  Well, some people are just like that, they like having a good time, trying new things and just going for it in general.  Oh yes, I know what you are thinking, not the CPA Linda, not the Linda of a certan age, not OUR Linda.  Well you would be wrong!

Linda and I met in college, a college with student entertainment opportunities 2nd to none.  Movies, concerts, speakers even keg parties were sponsored and paid for by the school (unwitting parents).  One of the many concerts offered to us was a Bruce Springsteen event in 1978.  The Boss was at the top of his game, Linda had heard of him but didn’t really know his music and of course she was all in and couldn’t wait to go.  We had seats in the 11th row center section.  At some point in the 4 hour show the band broke into the soon to be classic “Tenth Avenue Freeze Out”.  Everyone jumped up on their chairs and joined in with the chorus including Linda and I.  I think it was the greatest concert I have ever seen.  Linda was an instant fan.  Several days after the show in one of the many conversations we had recounting the epic event Linda asked me the song where we were all standing on the chairs screaming something.  I said, 10 Avenue Freeze Out?  She said, is THAT what they were saying!

At the time I thought this was very funny.  How could you get so into it and not even know the words?  But do you know what?  It’s not about the words.  What the hell does 10th avenue freeze out mean anyway?  It was about the emotion and the energy and getting into it.  She got it and was all in – an I think that is very cool.  So when the Kings are whipping the Houston crowd into a frenzy, I will have already heard all their songs, know much of their history, even know some of their lyrics but I really look forward to looking over at Linda with her fist in the air shouting “Your Sex is On Fire! ” . . . or something close to that.

Good for you for going to a concert. You are at the age where it starts becoming more of a hassle to attend, much easier to go to the Golden Corral dessert bar for seconds (at 4:30pm). Pam and I had tickets to see Bruce in early 2000, after he had reunited E Street Band. But she was also looking at changing companies and ended up going to see Ringo’s All Stars with Kristen and her soon-to-be new boss, so I took Tori (age 13) to see The Boss. Tori was unfamiliar with his music, but after a 4-hour concert, with the entire audience standing on their seats the last 60 minutes, going from 10th Avenue Freeze Out to Born to Run to Hungry Heart, who could not be impressed? Best concert ever, better than Stones (third; DLR-era Van Halen opened) and Sir Paul (second).

Sounds like you and Tori got the better end of that deal!

Mom – listen for my personal favorite “Reveille” 😉

  • Linda (Mom)

Now why would a song named Reveille be your personal favorite, my little Aggie?

Well, we know that isn’t true. You can tell them about the whole “hills are alive with the sound of music” thing on the way into school. That will set them straight. Plus, they probably haven’t seen your futterwacken
